Texas Dance Festival - TEX FEST





 


Dance Festival 2009

This event offers intensive training sessions in Yoga, Ballet, and Anatomy.
 
TEX FEST is based on the developing theme that the teachings of yoga and
anatomy
 enhance dance technique and help to maintain performance fitness.
Application of this training are reinforced in the rehearsals which culminate
in a concert offering participants a great performance opportunity
.

Sivananda Yoga is a two hour class designed around the chakra system.  It stretches, 
strengthens, and invigorates the body while at the same time allowing and creating
a  meditative environment that allows for deep self discovery.  Perfect for dancers
interested in taking their technique to the next level safely.

Supplies serious ballet and modern students with intensive classical training.
Builds coordination, agility, vocabulary, and strength.


 


Anatomy
Kate Tremmel
James Madison University

Anatomy and Kinesiology/Bartenieff Fundamentals — A class on the
functional anatomy of the living, moving, dancing body. Students learn basic anatomy as
it functions in their own bodies with anatomical diagrams and movement explorations.
Irmgard Bartenieff's developmental movement Fundamentals™ are intended to
help students find new approaches to movement efficiency and whole body integration
through attention to breath support, weight shift and locomotion patterns.

 


 
Faculty

Yoga Teacher - Sarah Imhoff-Jones, Huntsville Health Movement


SARAH IMHOFF-JONES received her BFA in Dance at Sam Houston State University and her MFA in Dance at the Texas Women's University.  She has supplemented her dance training and performance experience for the past ten years with various somatic techniques, and has received
certification in Neuromuscular and Therapy, Pilates and Yoga.  Sarah joined the dance faculty at SHSU from 1998-2001 where she began working with students to enchance their dance experience through somatic training.  Currently, as the owner and director of Huntsville Health and Movement, Sarah continues to develop Hatha Pilates, a technique that incorporates the flexibility of Yoga and the core strength of Pilates with multiple somatic tools.  In 2007, Sarah received her certification in Thai Yog Massage. 


 

Ballet Teacher - Jim Martin, New York University, Ballet Faculty

JAMES MARTIN is currently Associate Arts Professor and Associate Chair of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts' Dance Department where he has been a full-time faculty member since 1990. He has danced with Gus Solomons Jr., Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane and Company, Donald Byrd/The Group, and The New York Baroque Dance Company, among others. Mr. Martin has taught at many schools and festivals worldwide including the Mark Morris Monnaie Dance Group in Brussels, the Ballet Academy of Stockholm, the Dansen Hus in Copenhagen, the Université du Québec à Montréal, the Bat Dor School in Tel Aviv, the National Institute of the Arts in Taiwan, and the American Dance Festival, among others. His choreography has been produced in New York City by P.S. 122 (New Stuff), Ballet Builders/New choreographers on Point, St. Mark's Danspace Project (Food for Thought), 92nd Street Y, and The Soho Arts Festival at Dia Center for the Arts. Mr. Martin will produce his new evening length piece, "Merce's Floor" with "Purplemartin Dance Caravan" at the Merce Cunningham Studio in June 2008. He has also been commissioned to create a new work for the Pittsburgh-based ballet company "Bodiograghy" for their 2008 season.



Anatomy Teacher - Kate Trammel, James Madison University, Anatomy Faculty

KATE TRAMELL holds graduate degrees in dance from Ohio State University and Temple University.  She has performed and taught throughout the United States and in China, Denmark, England, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Poland and Portugal with thompson & trammell dance company, ZeroMoving Dance Company, and as an independent teacher/performer. She has been the recipient of grants and awards funded by the U.S.I.S./American Embassy, the Virginia Commission for the Arts, the Pennsylvania Council for the Arts, the Maryland State Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts, including a New Forms grant for interdisciplinary work. She has been making and performing dances with Cynthia Thompson as a duet company for over twenty years.  Trammell has been adjudicator, teacher, and performer for the West Virginia Dance Festival since 1997.  Along with Shane O’Hara, she co-created the JMU Summer London Intensive in Contemporary Theatre and Dance, a program which takes actors and dancers to the city for an immersion in cutting-edge interdisciplinary training. At James Madison University, Ms. Trammell is a professor of dance and the founding artistic director of the Virginia Repertory Dance Company. Currently she is pursuing coursework for a certification program in Infant Developmental Movement Education through the School for Body-Mind Centering. In summer 07 she was on faculty at White Mountain Summer Dance Festival, teaching Anatomy for Dancers.

2009 Texas Dance Festival Location:

Equipped with four large dance spaces, the dance facilities give the
dancers' full range of motion to truly achieve their classroom goals. 
The SHSU Dance Department provides the Festival with a fully working
dance theater to showcase our Festival Concert.

Lodging

SHSU Univeristy Hotel has established a group rate for our event of $75.95 per night.
Each room has two double beds.  The University Hotel is located right on campus with
a fitness center and cafe on site

Lunch Meal Plan

Each class day we will have lunch catered to us on campus from local restaurants
around Huntsville.  The cost for the entire week is $60.00
